High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE)

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in one or more of the HPGE domains; creative, intellectual, social/emotional or physical.

Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our diverse educational opportunities that cater to these four domains of potential and support High Potential Gifted Education (HPGE) policy. There are many exciting possibilities offered to all students at Barrenjoey.

Our HPGE program includes:

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

High Potential and Gifted Education Opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In Our Classrooms

Barrenjoey High School provides a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment where high potential and gifted students are encouraged to excel and develop into confident, capable learners. Our approach offers academically driven students the challenge and rigour they seek within a co-educational, inclusive, and community-oriented setting.

At Barrenjoey, explicit teaching underpins our practice, complemented by a strong focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, and inquiry-based learning. Students are provided with opportunities for abstraction, exploration, and curriculum depth to extend their understanding.

Learning environments promote structured collaboration and reflection, where strengths-based feedback and goal setting are integral to the learning process. Differentiated tasks adjust pace, complexity, and cognitive demand, while ongoing formative assessment is used to monitor progress and adapt teaching to individual needs.

We foster a culture of confidence, curiosity, and perseverance, ensuring that students feel supported to take intellectual risks and engage deeply with their learning.

Across Our School

At Barrenjoey, we recognise each student’s individuality and provide flexible opportunities to explore and extend their strengths beyond the classroom.

Students are encouraged to develop leadership skills through participation in the Student Representative Council, mentoring programs, and the coordination of key school and community events such as ANZAC, Remembrance Day, and formal assemblies.

Our co-curricular programs—including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, the Talented Athlete Program, and Creative and Performing Arts enrichment—offer pathways for students to develop resilience, teamwork, and excellence. Visual Arts students engage in gallery visits and workshops, while musicians participate in a range of performances and Department of Education initiatives.

High-achieving Science students extend their learning through the Science Extension course and authentic research opportunities, while our extensive wellbeing program promotes goal setting, and leadership across year groups.

Across NSW

Barrenjoey students actively participate in a wide range of academic and sporting competitions, including gala days, Combined High Schools knockout events, and selection for zone, regional, and state carnivals.

Students also engage in academic challenges such as ICAS English, Mathematics, Science and Digital Technologies, and the Australian Mathematics Competition.
