Technological and Applied Studies

Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) at Barrenjoey High School provides students with engaging, hands-on learning experiences that develop creativity, innovation, problem-solving and practical life skills. Through designing, producing and evaluating, students are challenged to think critically, work collaboratively and apply knowledge in authentic, real-world contexts. The faculty promotes student confidence, resilience and independence while ensuring the safe and responsible use of tools, materials and emerging technologies. Across all courses, students are encouraged to develop both technical expertise and creative thinking, preparing them to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing world.

In NSW, all students in Years 7 and 8 study Technology, providing a strong foundation in design thinking and practical skills. In Stage 5 and Stage 6, students can select from a diverse range of TAS electives, including Design and Technology, Engineering, Food Technology, Industrial Technology (Multimedia and Timber), and Textiles and Design. In addition, the faculty offers dual-accredited Vocational Education and Training (VET) pathways, including Certificate I in Hospitality (Food and Beverage), Certificate II in Hospitality (Cookery), and Certificate II in Construction. Supported by specialist facilities such as timber workshops, textiles rooms, commercial kitchens, computer labs, 3D printers and laser cutting technology, students are provided with high-quality, industry-relevant learning experiences that also support exploration of future career pathways and emerging industries.
