Learning Support

The Learning Support Team at Barrenjoey High School is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable educational environment where every student’s individual learning journey is recognised, valued and supported. Grounded in empathy, flexibility and high expectations, we believe all students have the right to access high-quality education tailored to their specific needs. A strong emphasis is placed on listening to students and families to understand diverse and often complex learning profiles, particularly for neurodiverse learners. Through ongoing collaboration, we create safe and supportive spaces for dialogue between students, families and staff to design, implement and continually refine personalised learning strategies. This approach ensures every learner is empowered to participate meaningfully in their education, with their voice central to decision-making and planning.

Our support programs are underpinned by evidence-based practice and a commitment to building foundational literacy and numeracy skills. Targeted interventions include QuickSmart Numeracy (University of New England) as well as CARS and STARS programs (Comprehensive Assessment of Reading Strategies and Strategies to Achieve Reading Success), delivered through small-group instruction to strengthen confidence and capability. The team also coordinates assessment and examination adjustments, including the preparation of Higher School Certificate Disability Provisions applications in line with NESA requirements. Staffed by three specialist teachers and a dedicated team of School Learning Support Officers, the faculty works collaboratively with classroom teachers to differentiate learning and maximise student engagement. Additional support is provided through Homework Club, offered twice weekly as a drop-in opportunity for students to receive assistance with classwork, homework and assessment tasks in a supportive environment.
