Languages
The Languages Faculty at Barrenjoey High School is committed to developing students’ ability to communicate across cultures while fostering curiosity, respect and an appreciation of the diverse world in which we live. Learning a language provides students with opportunities to develop communication skills, cultural understanding, confidence and critical thinking while gaining insight into different perspectives and ways of life.
In Year 8, students have the opportunity to study French, developing foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing while exploring French-speaking cultures and communities. Through engaging activities and authentic learning experiences, students build confidence in using another language and develop an understanding of the connection between language, identity and culture.
Beyond the Year 8 program, Barrenjoey High School supports students who wish to continue their language learning through a range of language courses offered via distance education. This flexible approach provides students with access to a broader selection of languages and allows them to pursue their interests and strengths while continuing their studies within the Barrenjoey learning environment.
Through language learning, students develop valuable skills for future study, employment and global citizenship, while gaining a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity and the importance of effective communication in an interconnected world.
