The English Faculty is committed to developing confident, articulate and critical thinkers through a rich and engaging curriculum grounded in literature, language and writing. Through the explicit teaching of creative, analytical, discursive and persuasive writing, students learn to communicate effectively while engaging with a diverse range of contemporary, classic, cultural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander texts. A strong focus on understanding context enables students to explore the ideas, values and perspectives that shape texts, fostering deeper interpretation, empathy and critical reflection.
Across Stages 4 to 6, students build their capacity as readers, writers and communicators through a carefully sequenced curriculum that promotes creativity, analysis and personal expression. Stage 4 students develop their individual voice, while Stage 5 students engage with Shakespeare, poetry and speculative fiction through a variety of modes including speeches, podcasts and multimodal presentations. Senior students can access Standard, Advanced and English Studies courses, with Extension English providing additional academic challenge and opportunities for sophisticated critical inquiry. Beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in a range of enrichment opportunities, including public speaking, debating, writing competitions and extension programs that further cultivate their passion for language, literature and communication.
