Barrenjoey Inclusive Learning Unit

Barrenjoey Inclusive Learning Unit (BILU) provides specialist and intensive support in a mainstream setting to students with a diagnosed disability.

Barrenjoey Inclusive Learning Unit (BILU) was established in 2024 to provide specialist and intensive support in a mainstream setting to students with a diagnosed disability. In the Support Unit we adapt teaching methods, curriculum and the physical teaching and learning spaces to ensure that learning is accessible to all students. BILU provides a safe and supportive environment within the main Barrenjoey High School campus where every student feels included and can reach their full potential.

The Unit has three support classes, each class consisting of 7-10 students, a classroom teacher and a school learning support officer (SLSO). Students in the support class have the same opportunity as students in mainstream classes to participate in the school’s and community activities, such as school sports, excursions, year-group meetings and assemblies.

Whole School Activities

Students in BILU will be supported to participate in a number of whole-school activities with their mainstream peers. These include timetabled wellbeing classes, assemblies, excursions and camps.

Excursions are designed to supplement and enrich the students’ learning. All excursions require a special consent form, which will be sent home for parents to sign and return. In addition, a Walking Excursion form will be sent to parents to provide permission for BILU teachers to take the students for small excursions within a specified area around the school environs during lessons. All costs for excursions and other school activities are the responsibility of students and their parents.

Barrenjoey High School Camps are a part of the BILU curriculum and are planned and administered in accordance with Department of Education policy on excursions. The camps are organised to be an integral part of BILU students’ learning program and are held in Years 7, 9 and 11. All students will be supported to participate in their year group camp.
